Behind The Scenes Temporary Exhibit popped up

Behind The Scenes...What's in the warehouse - Spring 2021. Admittedly, we didn't have a theme to build an exhibit for, but we do want to show our museum collection, even though we are still closed, so what to do? We made a 'Behind the Scenes...what's in the warehouse - Spring 2021' Exhibit in the Window Space of the Alameda Museum, 2324 Alameda Ave., from February 15 to May 15, 2021. The exhibit is showing some of the objects that are not normally on display in the museum. Some of these objects were donated a long time ago, but don't fit in with the permanent displays; some of these are newly donated objects; some of these are objects that will not be added to the permanent collection. (Even included a few…

Alameda Museum receives Rotary Club Grant On Thursday, December 17, we received a grant from the Rotary Club of Alameda, for our digitization project. In a zoom-meeting with Rotary Club dignitaries and representatives of other organizations that were awarded, a short demo was shown of the application holding the digital version of our card catalog. In the short demo two photos from the collection were shown, one of a 'Scotch' party of the Rotary Club in 1921, one year after the founding of the Club, and one from 1922, of the planting of the 'Rotary Tree' in -formerly called- Jackson Park. Last year, the Rotary Club awarded the Alameda Museum with a grant to start on this project. This year's Rotary Club grant will go towards another year's subscription of…

The museum almost set up for a sale event outside the museum. All summer, the museum's Board of Directors has been going back and forth about opening up the gift shop, and eventually even the museum was allowed to open - but with a list of precautions, requiring training, and supplies. We got some of the supplies, but few of our volunteers were willing to expose themselves to customers walking in, and in the end, even the outside sale was deemed too risky, with a renewed increase in COVID -19 infections. So the supplies will remain unused - for now. In the meantime, we took down the protest photo exhibit, we continue to work on digitizing the catalog system, we looked for new board members, and worked on a new Quarterly…

New Window Exhibit – Making History 2020

New Window Exhibit – Making History 2020

News
History is a continuum - we're all constantly adding to history, in small or bigger, day-to-day or only-once actions. Change can happen in a blink of a moment, or gradually, over time. In our second temporary window exhibit we are presenting 'Making History 2020', a photo-impression of one aspect of events that took place this year - peaceful marches in early June to City Hall and the Police station, and of the'Plywood Art' that businesses added to the plywood they had to put up to protect their shop windows against organized looters. Do a walk-by the Museum or visit the matching web page: https://alamedamuseum.org/temporary-exhibitions/making-history/

Update (September 2020)

News
One of the items now available in our on-line store. The Temporary Window Exhibit 'An Assemblage of Hats' has been taken down.  Although we have a anti-UV film on the window, and although the window faces the North-East, sunlight still enters the windows through reflections from passing or parked cars. Thus we dare not leave objects susceptible to fading - such as some of the hats - out permanently. The information is - for now - still available on the website (See https://alamedamuseum.org/temporary-exhibitions/). The board is exploring several other topics for temporary exhibits. The board is also exploring re-opening, initially only the gift shop. We are analyzing what steps we can take to protect the public and our volunteers from COVID infections, if we do reopen. There will be at…

An Assemblage of Hats – Pop-up Museum Window Exhibition

News
With the Alameda Museum, including the gift shop and the Meyers House, closed for visitors, the Board has been trying to find a way to make it possible for our community to visit, in a way that's safe for both our visitors and our volunteers. And the result is a pop-up window exhibition, running from today to August 23, at the Alameda Museum, at 2324 Alameda Ave: An Assemblage of Hats; an annotated selection of the Museum's Hat collection. Normally, these items, although not particularly valuable by themselves, are too susceptible to accidental damage (as well as to unexplained disappearances) to display in the museum, but with no one being able to touch, this is now not an issue. To make the exhibition even more touch-free, there is a matching…

It seems we're taking further steps back... The board has decided to cancel the lecture series for this year; even when we are allowed to reopen, 'mass' gatherings will most likely take a while longer. We have thought about doing a lecture using internet software, but that would open a whole new set of issues, so we have decided to put our hopes in putting one a good show next year. In addition to the museum being closed, our landlord has graciously protected the museum from window-smashing looters and the museum now appears even more closed than before. And in additional sad news, our longtime treasurer and board member, Bob Risley, has passed away. He will be sorely missed. The gazebo at the Meyers House is named in his honor,…
